View of mountains that sorround Achibueno

The Achibueno Defense Committee arose from a public meeting held in Monte Oscuro on Jan. 03, 2009 among neighbors and people who love the Achibueno to see how we can take a stand against this hydroelectric project. Today the Committee has legal capacity; it has over 40 members and a board of directors in charge of defining and coordinating the citizen opposition to Mr.  Isidoro Quiroga’s  initiative.

As a Committee we believe that the economic development is not incompatible with    preserving spots like the Achibueno river valley. On the contrary: unique places like this have a much greater potential for tourism than for producing energy.  This  is due to the river’s particular characteristics  (it has very little flow, therefore it cannot produce much energy) and those of the ecosystem that it supports,  which could perfectly well be a future National Park that best conserves the characteristic  flora and  fauna of the Central Zone.
